Vor knapp 5 Jahren haben viele geschmunzelt – eine Partyreihe, die die Musik Südosteuropas präsentiert und dabei nicht folkloristisch klingt, sondern eine schmackhafte Mischung aus Traditionellem im zeitgenössischem Clubbing-Gewandt für das tanzwütige Publikum parat hat. Diese Aufgabe hat sich zu eigen der balkanXress gemacht, heute eine feste Größe in der turbulenten Kölner Klubszene. Angefangen im Gebäude 9, rast heute der Xpress weit hinaus der Grenzen der Republik. Gern kommen seine Gäste in den Genuss der frischesten, frech-sanften Melodien und Rhythmen aus den Schluchten des Balkans wild gemischt mit allem, was der elektronisch-rhythmische Alltag anbietet. Egal ob Horo-Dubs, Babushka-Breaks, Klezmer-Riddims oder Gypsy-Speedbrass, für jeden ist etwas dabei…  Alles wird sorgsam ausgewählt und liebevoll aufgelegt vom Chef-Maschinisten Kosta Kostov, Musikjournalist, DJ und Musikproduzent, der oft an seiner Seite prominente Unterstützung hat: DJ Panko (Barcelona/Ojos de Brujo), DJ Eastenders (Frankfurt/Eastenders), DJ Click (Paris/No Fridge!), DJ Maga Bo (Rio de Janeiro/Global Beats)…
Über die moderne Rezeption der Balkanmusik lassen sich viele Analogien und Berührungspunkte mit anderen Musikphänomenen feststellen. Deswegen erlauben wir uns auf der Musikreise mit dem Balkan Express kleine Abstecher zu benachbarten musikalischen Gefilden: Maghreb-, Hispano- oder Bollywood-Klänge weisen manchmal mehr Ähnlichkeiten zur Musik Südosteuropas auf als man erwatet. Der balkanXpress ist gern gesehener Gast in Europas Clubs wie Barcelonas Sidecar und Sala Apolo, Divan du Monde in Paris, Wiens Ostclub, Athens Booze Club und beim EXIT-Festival in Novi Sad (Serbien). Im März 2007 und Juni 2008 raste der balkanXpress durch Brasilien und sorgte für euphorische Stimmung in Belem, Aracaju, Brasilia capital, Porto Alegre und Rio de Janeiro.

Im Mai 2008 Kosta Kostov gründet das balkanXpress Soundsistema, ein gemeinsames Projekt mit dem griechischen Produzent und DJ Georgios Fotiadis aka Basement Freaks. Bulgarien trifft auf Griechenland und die balkan-mediterranen Roots auf alle wunderbarsten Flavas zwischen Funky Breaks, Ragga und Electro in den frisch-frechen Tunes der balkanXpress Soundsistema...
